"Centres" (sometimes called "CTC" or "hole spacing") is the distance between the two mounting screw holes on a cabinet handle. Getting this measurement wrong is the single most common mistake people make when buying replacement hardware — order the wrong centres and the screw holes simply won't line up with your existing cabinet.
How to measure existing handle centres
- Remove the handle, or leave it in place if you can see both screws.
- Using a tape measure or ruler, measure from the centre of one screw hole to the centre of the other.
- Round to the nearest millimetre — common sizes are 96mm, 128mm, 160mm and 192mm, though longer pulls can run to 600mm or more.
Replacing a knob with a handle (or vice versa)
If you're switching from a single-hole knob to a two-hole handle, you'll need to drill new holes — check the new handle's centres against your cabinet door width before committing, especially on narrow drawer fronts.
No existing holes at all?
If you're fitting hardware to new or unhandled cabinetry, you have complete freedom to choose your centres. As a general guide:
- Drawers under 300mm wide: 96–128mm centres
- Standard cabinet doors: 128–192mm centres
- Tall or wide doors, or where you want a bolder look: 200mm+ centres
